Alexa skill just turned off every light in the house by itself

What the heck just happened??? sitting around with the wife eating dinner. all of the sudden she asks why the kitchen lights turned off. i looked up, then all the lights started turning off, doors locked, basically a massive turn everything off command. neither the wife nor I had issued a command to alexa. only reason i know it was alexa is that i saw this in the logs for pretty much every device in the house… any ideas as to what may have caused that?

I recommend checking in Alexa to see if it heard something. I’ve had a TV and radio set off events before. Or, my conversation was totally interpreted as a command.

This. Or you’re involved in a re-make of Demon Seed.

i vote for the Demon Seed remake … is there a way to tell when a command was issued to Alexa? from the logs on the vera i know the exact time it happened, but i don’t know how to match that up to the list of things on Alexa.

I’m sure you can see a command history in Alexa

Random google:

Yes, go into the Alexa app and go to settings. Go to Alexa Privacy and then select Review Voice History. It will tell you the times and what it heard. Usually you can replay that audio as well.

I’m wondering if there’s a message bus involved somewhere and some aged commands were let along during some kind of maintenance.

i know she’s been a little deaf the past few days by ignoring much of what i asked her, but I just thought it was that she was learning from my wife

I bet Mark laughed when you said that…

Major deja vu for me reading this. Have had this and similar experiences for literally years. Unfortunately in my panic (I use Vera, Alex and HA tools at my vacation rentals) I changed many variables so hard for me to identify root cause. Here’s what I addressed over time:

  • Amazon doesn’t specifically disallow using multiple homes/locations on a single account but since I aligned vera units, amazon accounts and alexa units uniquely by location and account, things are more stable
  • look for your Routines in your Alexa config.By default Alexa creates Goodnight may have all your lights set up to turn off. I have deleted all Routines
  • I use Bond controllers to automate Minka fan control. Their alexa skill had issues, removing and waiting for their v2.0 rebuild made a lot of difference as I had issues where all the fans and fan lights would turn on spontaneously, usually at 3am. You may have a buggy skill somewhere. I culled everything that I wasn’t using regularly.
  • avoid the Vera Alexa support if you can. I use it only for one zwave thermostat, everything else I support using habridge on a raspbery pi. I beta tested the original versions - slow, unreliable.
    Good luck
