iPad App and SQ Designer Released

John/Mat,

For those of us that recently purchased the original SQ Remote app for 29.99, will we be required to re-purchase the new app for 9.99? I purchased the full app about 2-3 months ago and wondering if I’ll need to purchase the new one after such a short amount of time from buying the original.

I’m in the exact same situation. Bought the old one for full price $29 a couple of months ago.

@Counselor

We have had a few people ask us about this. We do try to be every mindful and respectful of our customers while we try to build our fledgling business. First, thanks for your support. If you just paid the full $29.99 only a few weeks ago, it must feel frustrating to realize that a new version was then released.

It is a real challenge to price things right with mobile apps… How do you create and continue to support a product for a niche market when everyone expects “mobile app” pricing? We are also bound by Apple’s rules. Remember, we don’t actually sell you a license to use the app, Apple does. And they take 30% for the honor…

We felt there is a long held tradition in desk top and server software for people to pay for an upgrade for a major version release. The problem we have is that Apple doesn’t let us reward existing users by offering a discount. Although this is rumored to be coming soon.

We looked around to see what other ‘niche players’ did - and the consensus is that iPad software is a premium platform, and that for specialist apps, $30 is the right price point. So we felt we would offer everyone, new and existing an “upgrade price”.

We wanted all Vera users, new and old to not feel too much pain to try out SQ Remote HD. After all, $10 is about what you expect to pay for a cheap and not very useful universal remote at a discount store, or even just a couple of coffee’s.

Unfortunately we are not in the Angry Bird category where we have tens of millions of users where an app for 99c reaps us huge rewards. Nor are we a big company where the cost of development can be covered by other areas. We have a very small specialized market and the effort of getting this latest version ready has cost literally many man months of hard work (100% of the time… this is not a part-time hobby). Our revenues to date go no where near covering our costs, but interest in our products is growing, and as we grow we will be able to continue to offer products that are useful and valuable to our customers.

It should be noted that you are not “required” to move to the iPad app. The current version of SQ Remote will continue to serve you well on the iPhone and the iPad in 2x mode. If you are interested in a native iPad SQ Remote experience and/or ‘themes’, we would ask is this a reasonable price?

We generally release a minor version every three or four months, and we generally release a major version every 6 to 12 months. Given the size and growth of the Vera market, I would expect that for us to continue to support it we will HAVE to continue charge for upgrades going forward… and we hope that the additional features we put in make it worth while for you to continue to pay.

I hope this helps…

Regards,

Mat

wooo early adopter tax, glad i waited!

any, uh, pricedrops on the puck?

perhaps a refurb? maybe something scratched up? plastic? kit? bueller?

I fully understand the need for upgrades including $ and love the new native size iPad app. I also liked the old version but the “extra” space is great. I am a little less thrilled with the price of the developer app. As an early adopter of the puck, this software should be included with the bundle and offered to previous buyers. Or bump up the price of the app $10 and include it with the app. My 2 cents.

Me too! It’s kind of driving me nuts. Submitted a ticket a few days ago, but lost the ticket # so I can’t check its status.

Mat,

I fully understand that you are bound by the Apple’s licensing rules. However, having been in this situation before, the developer did find a very suitable method of extending a discount. In my case, I explained that I purchased an app, a very pricey one) and found that 2 days later there was a significant price drop. When I contacted the developer, they too explained that they were unable to offer a discount through the app store, so instead, they offered me the difference either via paypal or through a $20.00 itunes gift card/code. I took the later of the two choices, which not only kept me (the customer) happy, but also resulted in the putting the funds back into the app store. We both won… and I became a more loyal and even happier customer.

I believe that there is a fix for this in the latest ‘beta’ version of SQDesigner, so it will almost certainly be in the next point release.

Mat

I can confirm that the functionality of SQ Designer has been extended to allow assigning of commands for media devices (AV Devices) that are embedded within Vera and use Vera as the AV control engine rather than the SQ Blaster. The caveat is that you will need to discover these devices within SQ Remote first and then import your configuration into SQ Designer for editing. SQ Designer will not yet discover these Vera based AV devices and their command sets directly.

This will be in the next release - hopefully very soon.

Hello, I hope i am posting question in correct area. I recently added the sq remote HD to my iphone4 and my ipad2. Had a grreat time customizing and added lights and a panasonic blc230. Everything was found and for the camera there were 3 options for control to assign, 3 different pictures of a camera. After that when i select the camera, a small picture of it shows up but there aren’t any controls for ptz and can’t even stretch the display to be larger than silver dollar size. Same on iphone4.
The camera has the right/left/up/down functions working fine in ivera app and also automator app with controls. Can anyone offer suggestions on how to get sq remote to have some control buttons/arrows or something other than a black screen with a little image in the center?
Thank you,

You could maybe add a direct webview for the camera instead?!

Same problem ad wayneon with four foscam camera.

Is it possible to view the streaming? Maybe in the main screen in a frame?

Thank you
Matteo

Yes the feature in SQremote is called “webview” as I mentioned before, the advantage of this approach is that it will be streaming view.

The only disadvantages will be that if you want it to work outside of your LAN then you’ll need to use dynamic DNS and port forwarding or something similar. Also if you have security on your Camera then you have to embed the username and password in the webview URL field in the following format:

username:password@mycameraurl.com/whatever_the_rest_of_the_url_is or username:password@192.168.0.10/whatever_the_rest_of_the_url_is if local access only is required.
