Which IP Camera do you use with Vera

Good afternoon All,

There are so many IP cameras out there that it becomes very confusing at time of purchase.

Can you tell us, which IP camera you use successfully with Vera.

Mainly interested at outdoor cameras.

Thanks guys

Dom

The best way ahead with this is to use Blue Iris as your Interface.
Vera does not have sufficient internals to do this job properly, BI will work with nearly all cameras (I haven’t heard of any that don’t) and Vera works well with BI.
Now this makes the question which outdoor IP Camera to use.
IMO, they all come out of China and most likely there are maybe 5 actual manufacturers (I’d like some feedback on this from anyone that has any hard evidence).
NEO is a mid range brand that has worked well for me, but not directly with Vera, it is routed through BI.

Vera sells a line of interiors and exterior cameras. If you want one that is guaranteed to work with your Vera, you may want to look at those.

If you do not want to go that route, they have a list of certified partners here. Click on the cameras section.

If you still want something different, do a search in this forum for cameras people have used.

I recommend you separate your cameras and Vera and either go with what zedrally recommended or put in a SVR and keep your recorded security video local and free of monthly fees. This is especially true if you want to have more than 5 cameras.

Seconding @zedrally and @Jamr

Cameras and Vera are a matter of setting realistic expectations. If you want a couple of cameras that display a still image once per second, Vera (if you use a directly supported camera, or one known to work) may do OK. If you want to look at 30 fps HD video on a dozen cameras at once, you’ll need to do something else. Blue Iris, running on a separate PC, is popular and can be integrated reasonably well into Vera and the forum has lots of info. Even PC-based systems can get overwhelmed by HD cameras, so beware.

I have gone the route of a completely separate NVR/surveillance system and don’t do any Vera integration at all. The NVR is purpose-built and will support 16 HD cameras.

I am also a Blue Iris fan. I use 4 cameras as virtual motion sensors that are armed by Vera and Vera sends me motion notifications. I can then open my VeraMate app to see a composite of the 4 cameras, or, look at a camera to see what is happening. So far, I have not caught the “boogey man” but it is nice knowing the system works (like if my son comes over and uses his garage controller, or fast moving clouds change the light level too fast and trigger motion).
